Barnes for-profit deal
Published March 31, 2003
Regardless the reason the American Land Conservancy tells us about the purchase of the Barnes Ranch, it is for pure profit.
Please, Klamath County, have someone research the prior purchases of land by this group. And also research the people and big business involved in this group. Look at the profit they have made on prior purchases. If you check far enough back, I bet you find someone with the feds has already promised a profitable purchase of this ranch.
Allen Foreman, chairman of the Klamath Tribes, says he supports this purchase. Foreman then makes the statement that the tribes want the lake back to its natural level. What does he want - the lake back to the same level as when Fremont came through this country? I think if you check with the tribes, Foreman has less than half the tribe backing him.
John Elliott hit it right on the head when he doubted it could be all good if the federal government was involved. Al Switzer also makes a very good point with the statement of deep reservoirs with cold water. We have a natural storage basin close to the lake and could store millions and millions of gallons of water in a natural reservoir at Aspen Lake on the south side of the lake.
But please, please, please, check this group out. A better idea yet is tell the American Land Conservancy the feds are interested in the Aspen Lake for water storage, then you are assured it will be purchased.
Also while talking about the feds: Did it strike anybody funny that federal money was immediately available for the new headgate fish screen project. But what about the money promised to the farmers? Does anybody know?
