Work plans for Klamath Basin on the Internet

published March 28, 2003

By Dylan Darling

A new Internet site developed by the federal government provides an overview of actions being taken to address water issues in the Klamath Basin.

The Klamath River Basin Working Group, established by President Bush in 2002, is making available work plans for the Basin from the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs, U.S. Geological Survey, Department of Agriculture and the Department of Commerce.

The plans detail hundreds of long- and short-term projects the government is working on in attempt to solve the economic and environmental issues in the Basin.

Some of the projects described include the new headgates and fish screen on the A Canal, conservation and restoration efforts and the pilot water bank.

The Web site includes the original memorandum from Bush establishing the working group, which includes Interior Secretary Gale Norton, Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman, Commerce Secretary Donald Evans, and James Connaughton, chairman of the Council on Environmental Quality.

The plans will be listed in the federal register and are available online at www.doi.gov/klamath.
